The Virginia Z. was a diesel towboat, with steel hull and twin props, built in Pittsburgh, PA in 1957 by Zubik Towing Co. The hull came from the after section of the former Army Corps of Engineers diesel sternwheeler Tennessee (built in 1930, and owned since 1952 by Zubik Towing Co.). The forward section of the Tennessee was used to build another boat, the Quaker State. The Virginia Z. was 90 x 30 x 6..5. It was powered by Cooper-Bessemer diesels totaling 700 hp. The Virginia Z. was bought by Charles N. Grimm, Jr. in 1971 and renamed the Pittsburgh.
