Collins Street School with Union School

The Collins Street building was begun in 1949, and originally served Handy District No. 6 as an elementary school (this was before consolidation of the outlying country schools into Fowlerville Community Schools). The projected cost for the building was $65,000. The large windowed area was meant as a kindergarten classroom, while the office is just visible through the entryway. There were five other classrooms in the building. Eventually the building became part of Fowlerville Middle School, along with the former High School across the street, and was used by the school district until 1982. It is currently used as the Fowlerville Senior Citizen's Center.

Fowlerville High School, 1920s

After the old white building burned, those grades were temporarily housed in a house at the northeast corner of Collins Street and Grand River Ave. (Later that house was replaced by the old Fargo Gas Station.) This building was built in 1923. It eventually became the High School through the graduating class of 1955. The building was torn down in 1996, after sitting vacant for 14 years.

In May, 1953 the district was formally renamed Fowlerville Community Schools after voters approved consolidation of the rural country schools and Fowlerville Public Schools.

Union School with Old High School

This photo shows the Union School in the foreground with the old white building across the street in the background. From this angle the photographer would be standing downhill somewhere between today's Fowlerville Senior Citizen Center and the Fowlerville District Library. The Union School was temporarily emptied after Fowlerville High School (see next page) was built, then used for some classes as the schools continued to grow. The Union School was torn down in 1957.
