Thomas was the son of Thomas Grim, Sr. and Eve Bish. He served in the Civil War with three brothers, Armstrong, Frederick, and Charles, as well as their father, Thomas Grim, Sr. All four brothers were POWs in a Confederate Prison Camp, Camp Ford in Tyler, Texas.
