Reece was born circa 1834 and died August 19, 1864 in Annapolis, Maryland. He married Clarissa Grim, the oldest daughter of Levi Grim and Barbara Knisely. He was the paternal grandfather of Pittsburgh Pirates great, Arley Wilbur Cooper.
